We all do it. We all hang on to things longer than we should. Whether it be for emotional reasons, financial reasons or just because we haven't found the time to getting around to taking care of the things that need to go. We have things that should have probably been tossed a long time ago. Don't shame yourself for that, because you aren't alone. This year, we're going to help you tackle it.
The things in your home really do make an impact on you. When you're constantly using broken, torn, stained, or damaged items, your subconscious actually picks up on that. You know how you feel when you put on a pair of jeans that fit a little too snug? Your brain tends to spiral into a bunch of not so nice thoughts about yourself and your body. Same thing happens when you use a chipped coffee cup. Your subconscious brain actually tells itself "you're not worth a nice coffee cup". When you use a coffee cup that you love, one that's in great condition, your brain actually gets a boost and you feel better subconsciously. All of your "things" in your household affect you, and that's why we want to help you to declutter the chaos and boost your mood.
Let's start with a short list of items you can go through today and toss, or make a plan to toss and replace (if necessary) soon.
Sheets and Blankets
If they're tattered, torn, have holes in them, stains that can't be remedied, or if you just simply don't like the way they feel when you use them, it's time for them to go! It doesn't feel good when you slide your legs under the covers and have to maneuver to miss the small hole you know is waiting at the bottom of the sheet. Or have you ever grabbed a blanket and immediately made a face because you hate the way it feels? You deserve better! Let's replace those sheets and that blanket with new, or swap them out for some that you already have and love!
Towels
Any towels that are tattered, torn, have holes in them, long strings hanging from the ends, or are stained and look dirty...it's time for them to go! This can also include things like wash cloths, dish towels, bath mats, etc. When we step out of the shower and are feeling clean, it doesn't feel luxurious or even remotely good to use a towel that has stains on it to dry off. Something as simple as a fluffy, cozy, clean towel can make a big difference to our subconscious and even our conscious mind with how we feel.
Clothes
As we mentioned before, when you try on some jeans that fit a little too snug, you tend to start thinking some not so nice things about yourself. So what do you say we get rid of the too small, too tight, too big, ripped, or torn clothes with holes? This can be tough because usually when you get rid of clothes there tends to be a bit of an emotional attachment. We get it. We really do recommend just tossing the tattered clothing. However, if you have some clothes that you don't wear anymore because they don't fit you how you'd like them to, we recommend packing them all up into a tote. Keep that tote for a few months. If you don't touch it (or miss them!) within those few months that they're packed up, it's time to donate!
Dishes
Whether the dishes you're using are chipped, broken, or you just don't like them anymore, it's time for them to go. Repeat after us: just because the dish is part of a set doesn't mean you have to keep it. There is no reason to force yourself to eat off of a chipped plate, or drink your coffee out of a mug that the handle may or may not fall off of that morning. You deserve to enjoy that cup of coffee worry-free. You deserve to feel good when you're nourishing yourself.
Paperwork
We all have that pesky pile of papers lingering on the kitchen counter, in the office or in a drawer somewhere never to be looked at again. Believe it or not, that pile of paper really does have an impact on your well-being. Even if you're not consciously thinking about it, subconsciously you think about it more than you realize. Most of it, likely, is trash so let's put it where it belongs. We recommend starting a filing system for all of the paperwork that you have to keep. That way, it's easily accessible when you need it, and all of your important papers have a home until they can be tossed, too. One way to avoid that pile of paperwork entirely is to go through your mail daily. Throw away what needs to be thrown away, and file away the rest.
Furniture
This one can be tough because it's not so simple to swap out a couch if the one you have has seen better days. With that being said, there's nothing wrong with making a plan. Until you have the means to swap something out, you'll at least have the mindset that there's a goal in place because, again, you're deserving of a couch that makes you feel good! In the meantime you can always invest in something like a slipcover, or even incorporate a blanket over a spot that has a stain that you're sick of looking at! So this year let's try to make a plan for all broken, stained, tattered or torn furniture to go!
Decor
This is a little broad but it really can apply to many things. Do you have dead plants in your house that you just haven't thrown away yet? Or maybe you have a decorative statue that is glued together and it's...obvious. No matter what it is, when it's broken, dead or not enjoyable to look at, it's actually uninspiring and can take away from your energy. And let's be honest, our energy is depleted enough these days. We don't need the things in our home to do that too! The nice thing about decor and the like is that if you get rid of something, you don't necessarily need to replace it immediately. In fact, it gives you the opportunity to spend a little time to find something you really love and are inspired by to replace it with.
In Closing
In order to avoid eating dinner on the chipped plate, or drying off with the stained towel, or covering up with the scratchy blanket- try to start noticing how you feel when you use certain items in your home. If something doesn't feel good, let it go! The less clutter in your home, the less chaos in your mind. And the better you feel.
Cheers to a new year, and a happy, healthy, clean, organized and decluttered 2024!!
